This dissertation discusses the emergence and development of the notion of independent photography in the artistic and cultural field in England between the end of the 1950s and the end of the 1980s. It puts in perspective two understandings of this notion: one seeking the institutionnalisation of photography andits recognition as a Fine Art; the other based on a politically radical critique of photographic practices, institution and discourses which inform the social uses of photography. This politically radical independent photography, grounded in socialist and feminist thought, stands in opposition to both a Modernist aesthetic criticism and the dominant system of cultural industry. Originating in the radical protests of the 1960s, it encapsulates a number of alternative practices and a body of theoretical texts, based on a political and ideological critique of cultural production. The formation of collectives and the creation of publications and spaces outside of the institution is shown to be linked to the emergence of similar moves in the wider fields of thearts and critical theory. The study sheds light on little known practices such as feminist and «community photography» practices. The new ideological conservative order of the 1980s jeopardizes such potentially subversive and revolutionary practices. This dissertation considers that photography provides a useful prism through which the relationship between the political and the cultural fields may be better understood.
