Georges Joseph Demotte (1877-1923), then his son Lucien Demotte (1906-1934) were particularly active art dealers during the first third of the twentieth century between Paris and New York. Georges, the father, in less than twenty years, built a company located on both sides of the Atlantic and which occupies a prominent place recognized for two fields of specialty, the arts of Islam and medieval art. Lucien, his son, who carried on his own business for a shorter period, for ten years, continued the family business. He turns to the North American market and gives the gallery a new impetus by proposing ambitious exhibitions and integrating the sale of modern painting into his business. The Demotte are also distinguished by their use of reproductions of works of art, photographs and casts, and to build alongside their trade a publishing house of art books. This thesis is based on various sources, the most important of which is a collection of photographic plates reproducing mostly the works spent in their galleries, Paris and New York, donated to the Louvre Museum in the late 1970s. The study of the works reproduced on these plates makes it possible to trace the activity of the two antique dealers. Gems and jewellery, Persian miniatures, medieval sculptures, Spanish paintings, stained glass windows, French avant-garde paintings will thus be the successive objects of their trade between 1905 and 1935. Through the choice of objects proposed in their galleries, the portrait of the society of art lovers of the beginning of the twentieth century is drawn, especially in the United States at the time when very large private collections are formed, which will often reach and enrich the collections of the major museums then also in full expansion. The analysis of all indirect sources (archives of collectors and museum customers Demotte, other contemporary art dealers, local, national and international press) also measures the reputation of these two antique dealers whose career have been erased by some famous scandals. It is possible to follow their collaborations with other merchants, their relations with their costumers and their importance in the artistic world of the time and the debates that agitates on the promotion and the protection of the cultural heritage, on the question of the integrity and authenticity of works, in particular.
