Methionine, an amino-acid widely used in food-processing industry, is synthesized through a multi-step catalytic process in which one of the main intermediates is methanethiol. Among all the co-products formed is carbon disulfide, a highly toxic and volatile compound whose European market is stagnant. To avoid burning it and thus increase the ecological impact of the process, it is necessary to study its chemical transformation. Carbon disulfide hydrogenolysis is the most promising route since it allows the production of methanethiol without the formation of carbon oxides. In the presence of NiMo/Al2O3 (15,1wt% Mo), methanethiol is the main product, with dimethylsulfide and methane as by products. The presence of potassium (10 wt %) makes it possible to obtain total methanethiol selectivity by modifying the electronic properties of the active sites. This also corresponds to a decrease in the catalytic activity. The catalytic system defined thus presents the best compromise between activity and selectivity. By combining an experimental and theoretical approach, a first kinetic model could be established making it possible to account the positive effect of hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide under the defined operating conditions (250 ° C, P = 3 bar). It will be completed to deepen the reaction scheme and integrate the formation of secondary products.
